Mattel have launched The Creatable World, a new gender inclusive doll to challenge gender norms. 

The creator of the Barbie which launched 60 years ago have stepped into the modern world by creating a completely customisable doll that children can make to look like whatever they like. 

The dolls will come in a variety of skin tones, with different options of short and long hair wigs. The clothes, shoes and accessories will be interchangeable, and amazingly the body types won’t be the standard Ken and Barbie shapes. 

The company worked with physicians, gender identity experts and around 250 families to research the project and develop their new dolls. 

Kim Culmone, senior vice president of design for Barbie and fashion dolls at Mattel, commented: “We talked to them about what they had in dolls currently and what they were looking for.

“We felt it was time to create a doll line free of labels.Through research, we heard that kids don’t want their toys dictated by gender norms. This line allows all kids to express themselves freely…We’re hopeful Creatable World will encourage people to think more broadly about how all kids can benefit from doll play.”
