King Charles III awarded knighthood to legendary musician and astrophysicist Brian May at Buckingham Palace. May received the title of “Knight Bachelor” in an investiture ceremony on Tuesday, 14 March.
The rock band Queen’s lead guitarist secured the high honour for his work in music and charity. His wife, Anita Dobson (a former UK TV soap star), accompanied him to the ceremony.
In addition, the band’s official Twitter account extended regards through a congratulatory tweet. It said, “Arise Sir Brian May. Brian’s investiture as a Knight of the Realm took place at Buckingham Palace. The knighthood was presented to Brian by His Royal Highness, King Charles. Many congratulations, Sir Brian!”
The “Knight Bachelor” title is a basic rank for a man knighted by the UK monarch. However, that man is not inducted as a member of the order of knighthood (the British honours system fragment).
People who receive the Knights title get the entitlement of “dame” or “sir” followed by their name.
After the announcement, May stated that this honour might bring “a little bit more clout. Maybe a few more people will listen to me than would otherwise, you know if it’s Sir Brian on the phone.”
Formerly, Sir Brian May received the Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) title in 2005.
