As people adopt healthier eating habits, Indonesian plant-based brand Green Rebel Foods makes meat-free meals more accessible through its partnership with AirAsia.

AirAsia, Malaysia’s leading budget airline brand, will incorporate Green Rebel’s meat-free alternatives to its list of traditional Southeast Asian in-flight meals. The meals are available on the airline’s Malaysia route and selected Philippines and Indonesia routes.

Plant-based proteins from Green Rebel will appear in AirAsia meals like beefless rendang, nasi lemak, sisig, nasi rendang, and more. Through these, travellers will get a taste of the brand’s Beefless Rendang, Chick’n Chunks, and Plant Mince products, among others.

Adding on to that is AirAsia’s popular Pak Nasser’s Nasi Lemak, which will also have a plant-based alternative, exciting travellers everywhere. Nasi lemak is a Malaysian staple, consisting of fragrant rice steamed with coconut milk, a spicy chilli paste called sambal, fried anchovies, an egg, and sliced cucumbers.

In an official statement, Green Rebel’s Co-Founder and CEO Helga Angelina Tjahjadi shared: “Green Rebel is the first plant-based alt meat brand to partner with AirAsia in Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia.”

Moreover, Green Rebel and AirAsia share the same aligned values, particularly regarding sustainability and highlighting local flavours. Together, the partnership will expose local and international travellers to the wonders of Southeast Asian cuisine – with meat-free options for all to enjoy.

AirAsia is associated with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5-degree Celsius policy and hopes to achieve net zero decarbonisation by 2050. To accomplish this goal, the brand has implemented four pathways: a fleet upgrade, stronger implementation of green operating procedures, biofuel usage, and offsetting any remaining emissions.

Besides these, the airline introduced its Flight Operations optimisation solution as its commitment to sustainability. The software aims to reduce at least 221 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually and for every aircraft.
