Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) has announced expansion plans for its internal manufacturing presence in Malaysia. The investment comprises two brand-new assembly and test factories in Kuala Lumpur and Melaka. The development sits well in TI’s plan, with its objective to have 90% of its assembly and test operations in-house by 2030 to ensure greater supply control.

Yogannaidu Sivanchalam, TI’s Vice President of Assembly and Test Manufacturing Operations, said, “These investments are part of TI’s long-term strategy to expand our internal manufacturing capacity to support the increasing need for semiconductors and provide greater assurance of supply. TI is proud to have been operating in Malaysia for more than 50 years, and our decision to expand our back-end manufacturing is a reflection of the talented and growing team in Malaysia that will be critical to TI’s future.”

The timely expansion aligns with the country’s strategy to strengthen the semiconductor industry ecosystem and drive economic growth. It also aims to foster knowledge exchange, attract investments, and play a crucial part in the nation’s development.

Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), YB Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Bin Tengku Abdul Aziz, also added, “TI’s expanded investment footprint in our country will not only bolster domestic value chains, but also create knowledge-based, high-income employment opportunities for Malaysians.”

Texas Instruments’ Expansion Plans in Malaysia

Texas Instruments recently purchased a building beside its existing Kuala Lumpur assembly and test factory. Plans are underway to convert it into an assembly and test factory, with a cleanroom space of over 1 million square feet. Once completed, both factories will be linked and generate close to 1,300 new local jobs.

Meanwhile, in Melaka, a six-level assembly and test factory is in the works next to its current TI assembly and test factory. The new addition is expected to house a cleanroom space of over 400,000 square feet, and will be attached to the existing factory. The new factory will support up to 500 local jobs at completion.
