A new mobile phone combines the playful aesthetics of Barbie with a focus on user health and well-being.

The flip phone’s retro design is intentional. It aims to provide a break from the constant notifications and features that have become a hallmark of smartphones.

It’s a steal at £99 and is ready to be ordered.

Unlike today’s smartphones, the flip phone is designed as a simple device. It relies solely on technologies from the 1990s and 2000s, such as a camera, calls, and texts. It lacks internet and social media capabilities.

According to its creators, the flip phone is designed to facilitate a digital detox. It includes digital well-being advice, and HMD has observed an increased interest in disconnecting from today’s feature-rich devices.

In addition to its basic features, the flip phone offers a range of customisation options, including stickers and covers.

Lars Silberbauer, HMD’s chief marketing officer, said, ‘The constant barrage of online content overwhelms us in our fast-paced digital world.”

“If you’re looking to escape the digital overload, this Barbie-themed phone encourages you to ditch your smartphone and embrace a more carefree lifestyle.”

“We’re thrilled to bring together the iconic Barbie and the resurgence of feature phones. This device offers a refreshing alternative to modern smartphones, and we can’t wait to see how people respond.”

Analysts believe the new phone could capitalise on the growing desire for simpler devices without the internet and other advanced features as people seek digital detoxes and become weary of modern technology.

“HMD has done a great job revitalising the humble ‘dumb phone’. Everyone I’ve talked to is excited about the idea and the design. It’s an eye-catching device that turns heads,” said Ben Wood, chief analyst and marketing officer at CCS Insight.

CCS Insight predicts that over 400,000 units of the “dumb phone” will be sold in the UK this year despite the perception that it is outdated. This presents an attractive opportunity for a company like HMD.”

HMD has long recognised the growing interest in simpler devices and the nostalgia for earlier technology. As a continuation of Nokia’s old phone business, HMD is led by many former Nokia executives and offers updated versions of beloved Nokia models like the 3310.
