Huawei’s new smartphone, the Huawei Mate XT, released on Monday, stands out as one of the most exciting devices in recent years, especially given the timing of Apple’s iPhone event.
The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Edition is a groundbreaking tri-folding phone, the first of its kind according to Huawei. It seamlessly transforms from a standard smartphone into a substantial tablet.
The 6.4-inch OLED display on the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Edition expands to a 7.9-inch OLED display with a single unfold and extends to a 10.2-inch tablet with a high resolution of 2,232 x 3,184 pixels.
Despite being a tri-folding phone, the Mate XT Ultimate Edition impresses with its slim bezels, vibrant display, and relatively compact size when folded. While it’s slightly thicker than Apple’s latest flagship, it’s still comfortable to hold and use.
The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Edition packs a powerful Kirin 9 chipset, a triple rear camera system with 50/12/12-megapixel sensors, and an 8-megapixel selfie camera. The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Edition starts at 19,999 yuan (approximately $2,809) in China for the 256GB model, which is slightly more expensive than a 16-inch MacBook Pro.
All models feature 16GB of RAM, and higher storage options are available for 21,999 yuan (about $3,089) and 23,999 yuan (around $3,370). Vmall reported a staggering 3.7 million preorders before the price was even revealed.
The phone is unlikely to appeal to most customers outside of China, given that it lacks Google services due to the U.S. trade ban on Huawei. However, this is mainly moot since it’s highly unlikely the phone will ever be released in the U.S.
The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Edition represents a significant step forward in foldable smartphone technology. Its ability to seamlessly transform between different form factors demonstrates the potential for future devices to offer even more flexibility and versatility.
