While the brand remains his footwear and apparel sponsor, he will be the centre of its marketing campaigns and upcoming releases
Skechers Performance has extended its partnership with marathoner, Meb, who will remain ambassador for the line through 2023. With the brand continuing on as the athlete’s official footwear and apparel sponsor, he maintains his position as the face of its marketing campaigns and will work on new product releases.
Since rolling out performance footwear in 2011, the marque has introduced a line-up of running shoes based on the philosophy of listening to runners’ needs and building the best shoes for athletes with athletes. This credo began when it unveiled the first GOrun shoe with the runner as official brand ambassador and consultant.
After joining the team, he set a personal record at the 2011 New York Marathon, 2012 Olympic Trials in Houston, and took fourth place at the 2012 Olympic Games. He then went on to set his current record (2:08:37) and win the 2014 Boston Marathon at 38, wearing his namesake Skechers GOmeb Speed 3.
Meb is the only athlete in history to win the New York Marathon, Boston Marathon, and an Olympic medal. The long distance sportsman also currently holds the U.S. marathon masters record which was set at the 2015 New York Marathon with his time of 2:13:32.
Sights are set on his upcoming Olympic Trials race where he will contend for a spot on the United States team. Skechers Performance elite athlete, Kara Goucher, will compete for a spot on the women’s team. The event takes place in Los Angeles on 13 February 2016, a day before the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon.
“Meb’s motivation is contagious. He is an essential ambassador to the sport, a phenomenal role model and champion on and off the course. We are excited to continue working with him as he has truly become a part of the Skechers family,” said Rick Higgins, SVP, Merchandising and Marketing at Skechers Performance.
Skechers USA is currently the second largest athletic footwear company in America and the Performance division’s commitment to running is evident through the company’s athlete partnerships, marketing initiatives, and product innovation. The new spring performance footwear line reflects the advancement in its technologies.
