Lonely Whale Foundation has launched #StopSucking, a push urging consumers and establishments to switch to a straw-free environment.

Lonely Whale Foundation, co-founded by actor and UN Environment Goodwill ambassador, Adrian Grenier, has launched a social media campaign in concert with a notable roster of celebrities and influencers. Titled #StopSucking, it is aimed at impacting a straw-free environment.

Steering the dialogue towards the adverse effects of single-use plastics, the initiative seeks to educate everyday people on the consequences of consumption. The effort stresses how the American population alone uses about 500 million plastic straws daily, polluting the ocean and harming sea life.

Key participants in the digitally-led exercise include Van Jones, Amy Smart, Kendrick Sampson, Daniel Franzese, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Yuna, and several others. The stars on board the project have stepped in to encourage viewers to take the #StopSucking pledge and go plastic-strawless.

A dedicated website exists and offers a guidebook designed to help establishments make the switch from plastic to marine-friendly options such as paper, bamboo, stainless steel, and reed straws. The foundation’s Executive Director, Dune Ives, has emphasised that the push is about building a global audience focused on ocean health.

“By 2050, it is estimated that there will be more plastic in the ocean by weight than fish. Our ocean and marine life are suffering and it’s only going to get worse if we don’t take immediate collective action,” said Adrian Grenier, Co-founder of Lonely Whale Foundation.

“We see straws as a gateway plastic in understanding the pollution problem and a simple way to motivate consumers and industry leaders to take greater action against all single-use plastics.”
