Apple is rumoured to expand its AirPods lineup with two new models this year.
The upcoming AirPods models will phase out the AirPods 3 and 2, the more affordable options launched in 2019.
According to Mark Gurman, Apple plans to release a new AirPods 4 model in both high-end and budget-friendly versions, effectively replacing the existing AirPods 3 and 2.
They will be positioned alongside the AirPods Pro 2, leading Apple’s earbuds lineup. The most recent update to the AirPods Pro 2 came last September. Still, it primarily involved adding a USB-C charging port and replacing the Lightning connector to align with the iPhone unveiled at the same event.
Introduced in late 2021, the AirPods 3 features a design reminiscent of the AirPods Pro and advanced features like Spatial Audio, although they don’t offer noise-cancelling capabilities.
According to the new report, the higher-end version of the new AirPods is expected to introduce noise cancellation to the lineup. Currently, this feature is the main distinction between the Pro and standard versions of the AirPods.
Despite being older, the AirPods 2 retains its classic design with a taller case and protruding stems but struggles to keep up with modern features, water resistance, and battery life.
According to the report, they will be replaced by the lower-end version of the upcoming AirPods 4, though no details were provided about the potential updates. The current AirPods still use the Lightning port, which Apple is gradually phasing out, along with other older technologies that may see upgrades.
With the iPhone 16 rumoured to launch in September, Apple may also use this opportunity to introduce new AirPods models, following its usual pattern.
