Shangri-La has opened the doors of its Hambantota Resort & Spa, a 300-room beachfront property parked on what was once a 145-acre coconut plantation along the southern coastline of Sri Lanka. Nestled beside the Indian Ocean, the resort doubles as a quiet retreat and spirited getaway.

With some of the most captivating wildlife and exotic birds homed at nearby national parks, the island nation boasts a colourful heritage, while its southern region caters to leisurely exploration with historic temples, quaint fishing villages, and secluded beaches dotting the destination.

Showcasing the essence of a tropical setting is the hotel’s open-air lobby made from natural materials and adorned by local handicrafts. Upon arrival, guests are met by turquoise sea views, the sound of breaking waves, and a calming breeze before being whisked away to bespoke hideouts.

Beginning at 48 square metres, each guestroom features louvered shutters and polished wooden floors leading to a balcony made lush garden admirers, where peacocks roam. Meanwhile, spacious bathrooms are seen accessorised with stone-clad bathtubs and rain showers for a luxurious feel.

Each of the 21 suites provides privacy and butler service. Thoughtfully designed for lounging, the interiors reflect the location’s beauty through vibrant colours and a look-out to the emerald green hues of the fairways beyond. Also, patrons are afforded the convenience of complimentary Wi-Fi services.

Meanwhile, comfort-seekers can indulge at CHI, The Spa, where Ayurvedic treatments are delivered using organic herbs and natural condiments after a personal consultation. Twelve indoor and outdoor treatment rooms are on-site to offer stress-relieving massages, facials, and body treatments.

The setting of Shangri-La’s Hambantota Resort & Spa encourages vacationers to bask by one of three salt-water swimming pools, including a sunset and freeform pool. The ambience created aims to blend with the resort’s scenic landscape of flora and leafy surrounds.

Additionally, golfers can take advantage of a par-70 course at Shangri-La’s Golf and Country Club when it opens in mid-June. The resort is the first in the country to boast its own course. Designed by Rodney Wright, it encompasses a revitalised former sapphire mine.

“This stunning resort is the perfect backdrop for guests to experience the incredible beauty, culture, and warmth of Sri Lanka. We have created a destination within a destination where guests can discover unique experiences and find personal moments,” said Greg Dogan, President and CEO of Shangri-La.
