Iconic Masterpiece: Van Gogh’s Sunflowers

Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers series is among the most distinguished images in the world of art. Painted in France between 1888 and 1889, these paintings depict sunflowers in various stages of bloom and decay. They are more than just beautiful floral arrangements; they are powerful expressions of the Dutch painter’s unique artistic style. His paintings were often characterised by bold colours, thick impasto brushstrokes, and a profound emotional expression, and are among the most celebrated post-impressionist paintings. The Sunflowers have come to symbolise the artist’s passionate spirit and the beauty and fragility of life itself.

Bringing Van Gogh to Life

DesignBoom reports that the set boasts tactile and detailed blocks. The disk florets, for instance, use triangular, shard-like pieces to represent the petals. LEGO’s design team uses chilli pepper-shaped pieces to recreate van Gogh’s signature brushstrokes on the other flowers. These blooms attach to a removable frame, accentuating the overall canvas. A light blue tile bearing van Gogh’s signature adorns the vase, completing this LEGO homage to his iconic Sunflowers.

A Partnership in Art: LEGO and the Van Gogh Museum

LEGO Designer Stijn Oom explained that the design team worked closely with the Van Gogh Museum and its experts to create this 3D version of the iconic artwork. This collaboration allowed them to effectively translate the impasto technique of the original painting into the LEGO Sunflowers set, achieving a balanced composition.

A Tribute to a Master

In addition, to mark the launch, the LEGO Group has created two large-scale brick replicas of the painting, which will be permanently displayed in the LEGO Store Amsterdam and the Van Gogh Museum. The brick-built LEGO installation inspired by the Sunflowers will be displayed at the Van Gogh Museum from June to August 2025. Following its debut in Amsterdam, the installation will travel to the LEGO House Billund and LEGO World in Utrecht. For those unable to visit in person, a virtual curated tour will be available, ensuring that art enthusiasts and LEGO lovers from all over the world can experience the installation from the comfort of their homes.

Celebrating Van Gogh’s Legacy
