TBWA in New York has announced the entry of former BBH veteran, James Sowden, who joins TBWA\Chiat\Day as Chief Strategy Officer.

TBWA has hired James Sowden to head up strategy for TBWA\Chiat\Day New York clients including Accenture, adidas, Hilton, McDonald’s, and others. He joins from BBH Asia Pacific in Singapore, where he served for a decade as managing partner and also head of strategy.

As Chief Strategy Officer, he will assist with TBWA initiatives like design, innovation, and data. He also assumes an executive leadership position, replacing Aki Spicer, former chief strategic innovations officer, who exited the advertising network in October this year.

With over 20 years of international experience, Sowden has worked with big brands like Johnnie Walker, Facebook, Google, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Nike, IKEA, Axe, Nescafé, KFC, and Pizza Hut. His career at BBH was spent turning a small regional office into a success story.

He has also handled strategy at Bellamy Hayden, later acquired by Naked Communications. There, he developed communications and strategy for accounts like Electrolux and PepsiCo. Earlier stints have included Universal McCann in London and Optimedia in Sydney.

“James is an undeniable talent. Not only is he a brilliant thinker, but also a natural and nurturing leader. He has a track record—and an ongoing appetite—for taking on brand challenges with disruptive strategies that drive change,” said Nancy Reyes, President of TBWA\Chiat\Day New York.
