Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has introduced a new AI-powered translation tool that synchronises a person’s lips to align with a different language.

Meta AI is getting a significant update with features like lip-synced translations and the ability to chat with celebrity-voiced bots.

Celebrities like Dame Judi Dench, John Cena, and Kristen Bell have lent their voices to the AI chatbots, which users can access on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp.

At Meta’s Connect conference, CEO Mark Zuckerberg introduced new AI features designed to provide a more natural user experience, such as lip-syncing translations and celebrity-voiced chatbots.

Meta has gradually rolled out its new AI translation feature, initially making it accessible to a select group of Instagram and Facebook users. This phased-release strategy allows the company to gather valuable feedback, identify potential issues, and refine the feature before making it widely available to its entire user base.

“We’re experimenting with a Meta AI translation tool that will automatically translate the audio in Reels, allowing more people to enjoy your content, even if they speak different languages,” the blog post said.

“Using automatic dubbing and lip syncing, Meta AI will replicate the speaker’s voice in a different language and align their lip movements accordingly.”

Meta AI’s latest updates include advanced image processing features, such as image analysis, and the Imagine tool for creating AI-generated images.

Earlier this year, the Irish Data Protection Commission prevented Meta from using individuals’ data to train its large language models, compelling the company to suspend the rollout of its AI assistant in Europe.

A group of 59 tech companies, including Meta, signed an open letter urging Europe to reconsider its regulatory approach to AI, warning of a potential competitive disadvantage.

Meta did not join the AI Pact, a new agreement signed by over 100 companies committed to responsible and safe AI development.

The unveiling of Meta’s latest AI innovations increased its stock price, reaching an unprecedented all-time high. This surge in investor confidence significantly boosted Meta’s market capitalisation, bringing it dangerously close to the $1.5 trillion mark. The company’s valuation has been fueled by optimism surrounding the potential of its AI advancements to drive future growth and innovation.

As AI technology continues to evolve, the introduction of features like Meta’s AI translation tool highlights the growing importance of making digital content accessible to different audiences with various backgrounds. With leading voices contributing to this initiative, we can expect more innovative solutions that enhance platform user experience.
