Digital Domain to Drive AI and VFX Innovation in Hong Kong

Daniel Seah, Acting Chairman and Chief Executive at Digital Domain, revealed it during the launch ceremony at the park, which is run by Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corp.

As reported by SCMP, the company plans to invest HK$204 million (US$26 million) in this facility by the end of 2029 to expand its professional team. The new R&D centre will focus on so-called virtual humans powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and their application in service-oriented environments. It will also pursue the development of AI video production technology.

“We have the best motion-capture library, the best digital-asset library, and, since 2008, the best human face data library,” Seah said. Seah pointed out that the essence of machine learning, training and other disciplines under AI technology is based on data, and Digital Domain is committed to leveraging its database and copyright advantages.

In addition, the company aims to file five Hong Kong patents to promote technological innovation and inspire a new wave of industry advancements.

“These digital assets are the petroleum of the new era, and we have 30 years [worth of such data] in storage,” he said. “All these digital assets will be used to conduct machine learning and digital training in the Hong Kong Science Park.”

Digital Domain’s initiative in the city marks its latest effort to extend the company’s operations beyond its renowned visual effects used in major Hollywood films.

It boasts six films among the world’s top 20 highest-grossing and has earned three awards in Best Visual Effects at the Oscars for its groundbreaking work.

Despite facing bankruptcy in 2012, Digital Domain has shown remarkable resilience. Acquired by Hong Kong-based Sun Innovation Holdings, the company has continued to raise investments and expand into virtual reality (VR) content services. Digital Domain remains optimistic about leveraging its technology to support Hong Kong’s film industry and plans to expand its VR applications to banking, education, elderly services, and tourism.
