Tesco has introduced a new line of 88 products that will help the company to reduce waste. They have partnered with Loop to make this happen. The new feature will allow a customer to buy products from the range and return the containers in store once its contents are finished. The store will then send the containers to be cleaned, refilled and put back on its shelves.
The service will be available at 10 stores in eastern England, offering a range of popular products including some of Tesco’s own-brand items. In partnership with Loop, the global reusable packaging platform, you can now buy a wide range of food, drink, household and beauty products in reusable packaging.
Details!
Essentially the shopping experience wont be much different than usual. The majority of people will go and do their shopping weekly – the only difference is that at these 10 stores, you will see a dedicated Loop section or aisle. If you want to choose something from here, you just add it to your trolley as usual.
At the till you will be charged for the product as normal, however there will be a small fee included as a deposit for the containers. You can download the Loop app and once you have finished the product, simply bring the container back with no need to remove the stickers or wash the container.
There will be a return point so that the next time you go to the store, you can easily return your containers. Simply pull a lever on the machine to be provided with a unique QR code, stick this anywhere on the container and then scan it through the Loop app. After this you simply pop the container straight into the return point. After doing this, you will get your deposit back.
Sustainability – the time is now.
Ashwin Prasad, Group Chief Product Officer for Tesco said “The time imperative of making things more sustainable for the planet, is now”. He stated that, if a Tesco shopper were to make the decision to include just “three items from the Loop range in your normal shopping trip, this will remove millions of pieces of plastic”.
“Competitors that are trialing different initiatives, like refill stations for example, we applaud everything that everyone is doing in order to make that impact on the planet.” Ashwin expressed.
