A tribute to Steve Job’s vision for innovation, Apple Park debuts in April as a 175-acre campus powered by 100 percent renewable energy.
Apple has confirmed that its new 175-acre campus, Apple Park, will be ready for occupation by employees in April. The process of moving more than 12,000 people will take over six months, while the construction of its buildings and parklands is scheduled to continue through summer.
Envisioned by Steve Jobs to serve as a hub for creativity and collaboration, the ring-shaped ‘spaceship-like’ facility situated in the heart of the Santa Clara Valley, will replace miles of asphalt sprawl with a lush green sanctuary in Cupertino. Clad in panels of curved glass, the main square measures in at 2.8 million square feet.
The company’s late founder would have turned 62 today. To honour his memory and enduring impact on the brand and the world, the on-site auditorium will be named the Steve Jobs Theater. Sitting atop a hill, the commemorative structure will overlook meadows as well as the main building.
Opening later in the year, the entrance to the 1,000-seat venue is a 20-foot glass cylinder which is 165 feet in diameter and supports a metallic carbon-fibre roof. Adding to its appeal, the landmark location will also entail a visitors’ centre with an Apple Store and café which is accessible to the public.
Further highlights include a 100,000-square-foot gym for staff and secure research and development amenities. In addition to the features above, the parklands will encompass two miles of walking and running paths, alongside an orchard, meadow, and pond within the ring’s interior grounds.
Designed in collaboration with Foster + Partners, the technology-driven haven will transform five million square feet of asphalt and concrete into a vast expanse of grassy fields and over 9,000 native and drought-resistant trees. Positioned to be the world’s largest naturally ventilated site, it will be powered by 100 percent renewable energy.
“Steve’s vision for the brand stretched far beyond his time with us. He intended for Apple Park to be the home of innovation for generations to come. The workspaces and parklands are designed to inspire our team and benefit the environment,” said Tim Cook, Chief Executive Officer of Apple.
