The world’s first of its kind, users of the revamped classic can now drive the vehicle from a wheelchair or ride as a passenger

Ford Motor Company and BraunAbility have partnered to roll out the BraunAbility MXV, a wheelchair accessible sport utility vehicle which offers users the dependability of a mobility automobile. According to the carmaker, the variant currently represent the world’s only volume-production SUV of its kind.

Launched to promote the adventurous and ‘unstoppable’ spirit of an Explorer, its interior space is maximised to allow ample room for wheelchair navigation and comfort. Operators of the revamped classic are now able to drive the car from a wheelchair or ride as a passenger. There is also a tow package available.

“We’re thrilled the Explorer name is connected to such a highly respected brand like BraunAbility. Explorer has always been associated with helping people go places they otherwise could not, and BraunAbility MXV furthers that reputation,” said Omar Odeh, Marketing Manager at Ford.

The upgrade is obtainable with the Explorer base, XLT, and Limited models. It features patented sliding-door technology, removable driver and passenger seats, and a powered, lighted in-floor ramp. A sliding shifter and front seat base design provide increased space, while an integrated key fob operates both door and ramp.

Featuring a 3.5-litre V6 engine, the product delivers the performance and capability Explorer drivers have embraced for years, including an EPA-estimated 17-mpg city, 24-mpg highway, and 20-mpg combined rating. Actual mileage varies. The MXV also presents with an estimated 5,000-pound maximum tow capacity.

“Our customers are very excited to have a mobility option that reflects their individuality. For us, Ford Explorer was the obvious choice. It’s an iconic American vehicle that reflects the ultimate in independence and freedom,” said Nick Gutwein, President and CEO of BraunAbility.
