Brits are turning the week into a huge nationwide World Cup BBQ celebration

With temperatures nudging the early 30s and England’s World Cup campaign continuing against Colombia most Tesco customers have one thing on their minds for the week – stocking up for BBQ parties.

And based on last week’s demand Tesco predicts it will this week sell nearly as much as 3.5 million sausages, 4 million burgers, more than one million packs of BBQ meat, three million punnets of strawberries, one million punnets of blueberries, more than 1 million punnets of raspberries, and at least 650,000 packs of Greek cheese;

Also on the prediction list of sales are around five million bags of salad, more than one million burger and hot dog rolls, six million ice lollies, around one million tubs of ice cream, nearly 50 million bottles/cans of beer, and nearly one million bottles of wine.

“Fantastic weather and the world’s biggest sporting event are creating a real carnival atmosphere across Britain this week. The mere mention of a heatwave from weather forecasters is enough to change shopping plans and judging by present sales many people are enjoying al fresco dining right now.

“But of course with the added excitement of the World Cup and England doing well many people are inviting friends and family over to enjoy the fun together,” said Tesco BBQ foods buyer, Natalie Bastow.

For fans of hot food, the temperature is set to rise even further this week as the supermarket chain will be re-launching the hottest chilli pepper in the world, the notorious Carolina Reaper which is 400 times hotter than a jalapeno.

For the last week sales of BBQ food, salad vegetables, ice cream, beer, and wine have been the most popular items at stores.

Demand for beer at the supermarket last week was already the strongest of the year and this week it predicts sales will be even higher.

Natalie Bastow added: “This is already the best summer for BBQ meat sales for several years and our most popular lines so far have been maple pork loin steaks and Lemon & Herb Jerk Chicken Wings.”
