Sony Pictures, in partnership with Rovio Animation, is rolling out a series of shorts in conjunction with The Angry Birds Movie currently playing in theatres worldwide. The first of several spots, The Early Hatchling Gets the Worm is voiced by young children and features the iconic characters.

Beginning this weekend, the series is set to see release in select cinemas. Meanwhile, circling $300 million in the global box office, the film rises to new heights, with the commercials having already garnered a combined total of at least 40 million views since the first four were released recently.

The videos are part of a marketing campaign which has gone viral, with the first execution having been shared no less than 400,000 times across social media. Past shorts starring the ‘Hatchlings’ were previously released to mark holidays such as Christmas, Easter, Mother’s Day, and Memorial Day.

A trailer for one of the advertisements is available for viewing and public access via a dedicated Facebook page. Highlighting an unlikely friendship which forms between a Hatchling and a worm, said short will run at a few locations prior to the showings of The Angry Birds Movie.

From a story by Vadim Bazhanov, The Early Hatchling Gets the Worm is directed by John Rice, while produced by John Cohen and Catherine Winder. Meanwhile, the 3D animated comedy will reveal why the birds are angry, as it transports viewers to an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds.

In the paradise, Red (Jason Sudeikis), a bird with a temper problem, speedy Chuck (Josh Gad), and the volatile Bomb (Danny McBride) have always been outsiders. However, when the island is visited by mysterious green pigs, it’s up to the unlikely outcasts to figure out what the hogs are up to.

Featuring a hilarious voice cast, the line-up includes Maya Rudolph, Bill Hader, Peter Dinklage, Kate McKinnon, Sean Penn, Tony Hale, Keegan-Michael Key, Hannibal Buress, Demi Lovato, and more. The Columbia Pictures film is directed by Fergal Reilly and Clay Kaytis.
